Derek James Leman

19th Sept 1939 – 20th Sept 2022

Born in Walthamstow to Gladys and Bert Leman.

In 1962 he met Maureen and they went on to marry in 1965 in Enfield.

A lifelong career as an electrician, though it proved near impossible to get him to put up a light at home!

A jazz musician, playing both the alto saxophone and clarinet (though not at the same time), he and Maureen spent many nights enjoying live music and even went on to help plan the music at many school events in the following years (mainly consisting of artists like The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder and Ella Fitzgerald – the latter of whom he took Maureen to see as a surprise one evening.) Jazz always featured highly at home on the sound system!

He went on to share his passions with his children, Matthew and Chloe – his knowledge and business with Matthew, his 70-year love of Formula 1 with Chloe, and his love of music with them both. A keen fisherman, he spent many an afternoon by the riverside – not usually catching much, but enjoying it all the same. His fishing hat now hangs proudly in Maureen’s hallway.

It wouldn’t be complete to describe Derek without mentioning he was rather partial to a glass (or two!) of red wine or whisky. A somewhat a shy and quiet man until he had one or two drinks in him. He had been known to walk home after the family had been to a party while swinging Maureen’s bag around his head!

He passed away peacefully on September 20th after a long illness. A much-loved husband, father and grandfather (to Sam, Josh and Noah), he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.

Instead of flowers, if anyone wishes, we would greatly appreciate donations to either Prostate Cancer UK, or Alzheimer’s Research UK.
