Mr John George Sweetland

23/10/1925 - 8/10/2024John SWEETLAND - Pic Front.jpgJohn was born in Kennington, Lambeth London.He had three sisters, Joan, netty,and Eileen. In his early years he spent most of his time on his father’s farm in Goldhanger, Essex. In his late teens he joined the Royal Navy and served on the minesweeper H.M.S RYE. During WW2 D. Day landings, he helped clear the sea for the Omaha beach landings. After he left the navy, he worked at his father’s butchers’ shop in the Eastend of London for a short while. He then bought with his first wife Olive, the property at 10 Stortford Rd in Gt Dunmow called J G Sweetland’s in 1952. They both built a wonderful business and went on to have two children. Very sadly Olive died in 1966 .John remarried to his second wife jill in 1972 and gained three step children .Away from work he played bowls and would frequently meet his friends in the Dunmow club He was also a keen gardener growing all varieties of vegetables, shrubs and flowers whilst tending to his immaculate lawn .In his retirement he was happy to be at home, and going for walks especially at Goldhanger. He had a very keen interest for cricket, horse racing and above all else he loved supporting his favourite football team Chelsea F C. After along happy life John sadly passed peacefully at the age of 98 yrs. He will always be in our hearts and memories.
