Mr Michael Charles Stannard

Michael STTANNARD - IMP2copy.jpg

As we all know, Michael devoted probably equivalent of years of his life to charity. For nearly all of his life it was Variety, the Children's Charity he was especially involved with, visiting children at home and schools to assess them for mobility and sensory aids etc and taking his assessments to bursary meetings... Rumour has it, he never actually assessed any case as one that wasn't in need.

In recent years, he was a volunteer collecting surplus donated food from supermarkets (to reduce food waste) and delivering it to the community fridge in Halstead or the Food Bank. He also did voluntary packing shifts at the Food Bank locally.

Looking through his direct debits since he passed, he really did have a soft spot for any cause as regular donations range from those to Age Uk to Make a Smile. The charities we've chosen have been chosen because the type of cancer (Neuroendocrine Tumours) Michael had was very rare and this support/research needs all the help it can get. The type he had was slow progressing, but that just meant it slowly stripped him of his independence, dignity and his quality of life. Because it's rare, research is not well funded and there's not a lot of information available to support patients. Michael was supported directly by the NET Patient Foundation, supported with dietary information and even with support groups to meet people with the same condition, it was often a lonely, precarious dark place for him calling the tumours his 'gremlins.' UKI NETS is pushing research and that's essentially what will hopefully mean current and future sufferers of the disease are able to get even better care and live even longer than Michael.

Get your hands in your pockets for the below charities instead of flowers, to make a real difference, or donate to a different charity of your choice in Michael's memory.

NET Definition: A neuroendocrine tumour is a rare tumour that can develop in many different organs of the body. It affects the cells that release hormones into the bloodstream.

Let's be more Michael. X

P.S - If you own your own business, giving to charity can get you tax relief and we all know how much Michael hated 'the tax man.'

Total collected to date: £833.01

Uk And Ireland Neuroendocrine Tumour Society

UK and Ireland Neuroendocrine Tumour Society [UKI NETS] came about in the year 2000 with a meeting of UK and Ireland neuroendocrine experts. At the time there was little interaction amongst the specialists with people working within their own small teams to manage these incredibly complex conditions. To compound matters there was a lack of evidence for treatments being used with no structure in place to deliver large scale trials. The UK-NETwork was created to meet these challenges. This later transformed in to UKI NETS.

The society represents scientists, nurses, allied health care workers and clinicians involved in providing services to NET patients. The society’s aims are to:

  1. Standardise practise in UK and Ireland
  2. Improve standards of NET services in UK and Ireland
  3. Support setting up specialist services
  4. Promote education
  5. Promote collaborations
  6. Promote clinical trials and research

The society has been very successful in meeting these targets. It has galvanised the community of NET experts, promoting discussions and collaborations, allowing sharing of experience, highlighting areas for development, and supporting research.
