Philip ‘Dessie’ Hall RIP –  1940-2025

Dessie was born and raised in Wexford, Ireland attending the Christian Brothers School and representing Sarsfields in GAA.  He was the middle son of the ten children of Eddie and Elizabeth Hall of Carrigeen Street.  He joined the Irish diaspora as he ventured to London in the early 1960s where he met his future wife Teresa Quinlan from Co Tipperary at the notorious Galtymore Club in Cricklewood.  The rest is history.  After they married and had son no 1, Eamonn, they moved to Harlow New Town in 1967 where Dessie took up a new quality control role at Key Glass Factory Works – here he stayed until he retired over 30 years later.  Son no 2, David, came along in 1969 to complete the family.  Much later on grandchildren Amelia, Clíodhna, Annabelle and Conor came along to brighten up his life.  Although always a proud Wexford and GAA man he immersed himself into factory life and the local Irish Community – even trying his hand at that most English of sports, Cricket!  He was a locally famed Horseshoes Pitcher, and interrogator of Sunday morning linesmen.  A devout Pioneer, never having touched a drop, even the brandy infused Xmas cakes proved too strong for his palate.  Dessie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about 18 months ago as his memory started to wobble.  But he carried on living independently well into 2025 with the love and support of his family and friends.  Dessie was loved by everyone and was, and will remain, a beloved Husband, Father, Grandad, Uncle, Brother, Son and Friend.

The Alzheimer’s Society were a great help to Dessie and the boys as they traversed the initial diagnosis and at each and every hospital visit.  Always giving honest and practical support and advice – it’s a great resource for anyone facing up to life with Alzheimer’s.

Mr Matthew Rivers

The bowlers and friends of Des, as we knew him, of Meadow Social Club at the GPCA were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Des. His company at our bowling sessions three times a week was very welcome and we missed him when his illness prevented him coming to our sessions. Rest in peace.
