Established in 1995, The Antonio Aleixo Community Centre in Quarteira, Algarve, support the whole of the community from babies to the elderly. There is a baby crèche, nursery classes for small toddlers of 2-6 years, dancing and knitting clubs for the elderly, to name but a few. Some of the children in the nursery classes have experienced tragic abuse and neglect.
Joan, when becoming Lady Captain of Quinta do Lago Golf Club in 2004, heard that some of the vulnerable children did not receive a gift at Christmas, and at first she personally gave gifts to some of the children. This was soon supported by the CGQL ladies and the 'Christmas Wish List' was up and running. The CGQL ladies became sympathetic and enthusiastic to buy and wrap these 'wishes' and for the past 20 years, each successive lady Captain has embraced this charity and given generously to the cause. Other projects of the foundation, is the supply of baby products, nappies, milk and cereal to the most needy mothers and babies, and 'back to school' necessities for the underprivileged. Joan always supported these projects and would, whenever she came to Portugal, turn up with armfuls of products such as nappies and milk, as well as a generous contribution to 'back to school' supplies.
