Dementia Uk

Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of progressive conditions that affect the brain. There are over 200 subtypes of dementia, but the five most common are: Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia and mixed dementia.

The brain is made up of nerve cells (neurones) that communicate with each other by sending messages. Dementia damages the nerve cells in the brain so messages can’t be sent from and to the brain effectively, which prevents the body from functioning normally.

Regardless of which type of dementia is diagnosed and what part of the brain is affected, each person will experience dementia in their own unique way.

Dementia can affect a person at any age but it is more commonly diagnosed in people over the age of 65 years. A person developing dementia before age 65 is said to have young onset dementia.

There are over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this is set to rise to over one million by 2021.

Bowel Cancer Uk

We are the UK's leading bowel cancer research charity. We are determined to save lives and improve the quality of life for all those affected by bowel cancer.

We support and enable research

In 2015 we announced our ambitious move into research. The major advances in saving lives from bowel cancer in the past 20 years have all come through research. Through strategic investment in targeted research, we will deliver improvements in bowel cancer survival in our lifetime.

We aim to increase the number of people surviving bowel cancer within five years of diagnosis from 50% to 75% by 2025.

One of the first major projects we are working on is bringing together the leading bowel cancer scientists and clinicians to identify gaps in current research, which if addressed, could save thousands of lives.

We campaign

Working in partnership with people affected by bowel cancer and the clinical and research community, we campaign for early diagnosis and access to best treatment and care across the UK. You can make a difference by joining our campaign supporters network.

We provide expert information and education

We educate patients, the public and professionals about bowel cancer by providing expert information and training. We do this through our website, a range of publications free to order and download and awareness talks in the community. We also run training for healthcare professionals to ensure they have the latest information regarding signs and symptoms, risk factors and the screening programme.

We fundraise to save lives

We are determined to save lives from bowel cancer but we can’t do this without you. There are lots of ways you can support us and help fund vital research to stop bowel cancer.
