Terry North.
Born 22/7/1936
Died 25/01/2026
Terry was born in Leigh on Sea, the third child of Rose and Joseph (Joe) North in 1936. He spent some of his early life in Blackpool where Joe, a civil servant was sent with work during the war. Terry always had fond memories of his time in Blackpool and it perhaps sowed the seeds for his career in the holiday business.
The family returned to Leight on Sea after the war. Terry was bright and lively boy, with a mischievous sense of humour. He gained a full scholarship to Dulwich college. He then spent his national service ‘lounging on a beach’ in Malayia (his description) and on his return trained as a lawyer. He subsequently enjoyed a very successful and high-profile career, holding board level positions with Butlins and Rank. His work took him around the world where he dealt with people ranging from Lord Mountbatten to Steven Speilburg!
He met his wife Penny at the local cricket club and they married in 1964 They had a long and happy marriage with three children, six grandchildren and recently the arrival of two great grandchildren.
Terry was able to retire early, however shortly after retiring he was diagnosed with cancer. Thanks to the early detection he made a good recovery and him and Penny were able to spend precious years travelling, being very involved in the lives of their grandchildren and relaxing at their place in Thorpeness.
Sadly, Penny became unwell with Parkinsons and Dementia. Her rapid deterioration was a deep shock for him and his devotion to her at this time marked the deep love he felt for her. Towards the end of her life, Terry was diagnosed with dementia, thankfully it didn’t rob us of his essential ‘Terriness’ and he continued to touch the lives around him his warmth and good humour.
Our dad was a warm, funny, compassionate and deeply consistent presence in our lives and we were so lucky to have him. In his honour we ask that you donate to two charities that were close to his heart – Cancer Research and Dementia UK
Cancer Research fund scientists, doctors and nurses to help beat cancer sooner. They also provide cancer information to the public. Your donation will help our scientists get closer to finding a cure.

Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of progressive conditions that affect the brain. There are over 200 subtypes of dementia, but the five most common are: Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia and mixed dementia.
The brain is made up of nerve cells (neurones) that communicate with each other by sending messages. Dementia damages the nerve cells in the brain so messages can’t be sent from and to the brain effectively, which prevents the body from functioning normally.
Regardless of which type of dementia is diagnosed and what part of the brain is affected, each person will experience dementia in their own unique way.
Dementia can affect a person at any age but it is more commonly diagnosed in people over the age of 65 years. A person developing dementia before age 65 is said to have young onset dementia.
There are over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this is set to rise to over one million by 2021.

So sorry to hear Terry has left us. Will always remember his amusing anecdotes from his past when we were drinking in the pub with Joe Christy and Mike Morgan. He was a really, really nice man. Best wishes to all his family.
