Bransby Horses
Bransby Horses is an equine welfare charity which was founded in 1968. Since then the Charity has helped over 1000 animals.
Our objective is to prevent and relieve cruelty to horses, ponies and donkeys, to protect them from unnecessary suffering and for that purpose to promote knowledge of their care and treatment among the public. We are completely funded by the generosity of public donations.
Between our two sites in Lincolnshire and Herefordshire we have over 450 animals currently in our care, which keeps us constantly busy. The Bransby Horses site near Lincoln is open to the public 365 days a year; it is a great day out for all the family with plenty to see and do. Unfortunately our Herefordshire site is not currently open to the public.
The last couple of years have been the most challenging years in Bransby’s 46 year history. We took into care more than 180 horses during 2012 and 2013, most of which were rescued directly from situations of cruelty or neglect. We pulled out all of the stops to ensure that we could give these animals the care that they so desperately needed and we will continue to ensure that resources are available to help even more horses and during 2014. Poor weather conditions added to the many challenges that we faced. One of the wettest summers in history meant that grazing on our grassland had to be restricted to prevent poaching of the land.
We have been fortunate to have been able to utilise the all weather woodchip areas that were created following the charity’s successful Winter Care Appeal in 2012.
Another important aspect of the charity’s work is the provision of education in relation to horse welfare. This work will be taken further forward over the next few years, particularly with the development of a wonderful new Visitor and Education Centre at our Lincolnshire site which we hope many of you will be able to come and experience for yourselves.
Due to the increased demand for our services a new Animal Reception Centre has been developed at the Lincolnshire site. This has been made possible by some generous legacies that have been bequeathed to the Charity over the past 2 years. This purpose built facility will enable large groups of animals to bereceived into the Charity’s care. It will provide a safe place for their initial assessment, handling and medical facilities to enable them to
be brought back into full health before moving onto the main yards for further rehabilitation.
